When Driving on Slick Roads, You Should Do These Things

2021 Honda Passport Sport on Snowy Road

Maybe you’ve heard about the recent multi-car pileup in Colorado that involved 24 vehicles or the even worse accident in Kentucky that involved 75 vehicles. If you’re a veteran of New Jersey winter driving, then you’re no stranger to hazardous road conditions. You already know that when driving on slick roads, you should be careful and slow down. But, are there other things you can do to avoid a pile-up in light of the severe storms we’re expected to get this winter. Our service department wants you to be safe while driving on our Bayonne roads, so Metro Honda has put together the winter driving safety tips below.

Winter Driving Safety Tips

Unfortunately, the occasional multi-car pileup is not that uncommon during the winter. Like most Newark drivers, you know that when driving on slick roads, you should exercise extra caution. But, that’s not true of every driver on the road, which is even more reason to drive defensively. Here are some winter driving tips to help you avoid accidents:

When Driving on Slick Roads, You Should…

  • Drive slowly.
  • Create plenty of distance between yourself and the car in front of you.
  • Be wary of cars that are tailgating you and give them a chance to go around.
  • Be extra observant and watch for hazards such as ice that is not very visible or crashes or slowdowns ahead.
  • Do not drive next to someone in another lane.
  • Avoid swerving or braking suddenly – come to stops gradually.
  • Be realistic about what your car can do and how long it will take to stop.
  • Steer into a soft object or otherwise avoid hitting another car or pedestrian if you are going to crash.
  • Wait before exiting your vehicle after a crash in case other cars will be crashing into the pileup.
  • Once exiting your car, run to the other side (front) of the multi-car pileup to avoid getting hit by other cars.

Drive by Protecting Yourself & Others

The more caution everyone exercises on our Hoboken roads this winter, the safer everyone will be. By taking these precautions while driving, you may save your own life and the lives of others.
