Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal
Abandoned in 1967, this Hudson River terminal was overtaken by foliage. Since the terminal has been restored and is a departure point for ferry trips to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Still, outside, the rest of the area serves as a beautiful urban ruin located in Jersey City. If you are looking for a chance to snap some unique outdoor pics, a visit to the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal is worth your time.
Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital
Situated on two man-made islands, the Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital included a general hospital, a women’s ward, pediatric ward, maternity ward, psychiatric ward, and four operating rooms. Limited tours done in partnership with the Save Ellis Island provide a glimpse at the complicated life of immigrants coming to the United States.
One of the unusual attractions of Jersey City started out as a literal dump. Until the 80s, the anyone traveling the Turnpike near the Meadowlands of Kearny would be confronted with a giant landfill that had overtaken the local wetlands. This eyesore was converted by artist Nancy Holt into a giant land art piece known as the Sky Mound. Now, this outdoor art feature has helped reclaimed the space the landfill destroyed, and even serves as a sanctuary for migratory birds.
Our list of fun things to do in NJ wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Infinity Climber. Located at the Liberty Science Center, this exhibit is billed as the “world’s first suspended multi-story play space” and has been providing a thrill to visitors since its conception by Spencer Luckey. Contained in over miles of 19 miles of wire mesh, this unusual attraction is suspended 35 feet in the air.
