How to Check Car Oil

Motor oil is an essential part of your vehicle’s performance, so it’s important to keep an eye on your fluid levels. Even though your Honda is equipped with the Maintenance Minder system, which will alert you when it’s time to change the oil, it is important to know how to check the oil level in your car. Whether you drive a Honda Pilot in Bayonne or a compact Honda Fit in Newark, we’ll teach you the basics of how to check car oil level properly.

DIY Car Oil Maintenance

Before you reach for the hood, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with your vehicle. Many new Honda models include electronic oil monitors that don’t use a traditional dipstick, while others do. Your owner’s manual will fill you in on all the details. But as a general rule, follow these steps:

  • Make sure your car is parked with the engine off. Park on a level surface to get an accurate reading and make sure that your engine is completely cool.
  • Pop the hood and locate the dipstick.
  • Pull out the dipstick and wipe off the oil with a clean cloth.
  • Put the dipstick back in all the way. Pull it back out and look at the oil level.

Your dipstick will have a line to indicate the correct oil level, so simply check to see whether or not your oil line meets the indicator line. If you’re running low, add oil. Your owner’s manual will let you know what type of motor oil is the best choice for your car.
